Chlorine is a kind of gaseous elementary substance with the chemical formula of Cl2. Under normal temperature and pressure, it is yellow green, and is a highly toxic gas with strong pungent smell, asphyxiating and has a higher density than air. It is soluble in water and alkali solution, and is easily soluble in organic solvents (such as carbon tetrachloride). It is easy to compress and can be liquefied into yellow green oily liquid chlorine. It is one of the main products of chlor-alkali industry and can be used as a strong oxidant. It is used to produce inorganic chemical products such as sodium hypochlorite, aluminum chloride, ferric trichloride, bleaching powder, bromine and phosphorus trichloride, as well as organic chlorides, such as chloroacetic acid, epoxy chloropropane, monochlorobenzene, etc. It is also used in the production of neoprene, plastics and plasticizers. In the daily chemical industry, it is used to produce raw materials of synthetic detergent, such as sodium alkyl sulfonate and sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate.
