Liquid chlorine

Chlorine is a gaseous element with the chemical formula Cl₂. At room temperature and pressure, it appears as a yellow-green gas with a pungently irritating odor—it’s highly toxic and suffocating, and its density is greater than that of air. Chlorine is soluble in both water and alkaline solutions, yet readily dissolves in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride. It compresses easily and can be liquefied into a yellow-green, oil-like liquid known as liquid chlorine, which is one of the primary products of the chlor-alkali industry and serves as a powerful oxidizing agent. Chlorine is widely used in the production of inorganic chemicals like sodium hypochlorite, aluminum chloride, ferric chloride, bleaching powder, bromine, and phosphorus trichloride. It also plays a key role in manufacturing organic chlorides, including chloroacetic acid, epichlorohydrin, and monochlorobenzene, among others. Additionally, chlorine is essential in the synthesis of chloroprene rubber, plastics, and plasticizers. In the daily chemical industry, it is a crucial raw material for producing synthetic detergents, such as sodium alkyl sulfonates and sodium alkylbenzene sulfonates.
